(Pisa, Tuscany, Italy, IT)
There are an enormous number of beautiful churches in Pisa and most are in absolutely superb condition. Here is a selection of Pisa churches and basilicas, which are well worth a visit during your stay in Pisa.
Pisa Churches: Cattedrale - Il Duomo di Pisa - Piazza del Duomo, Pisa, Italy
Tel: +39 (0)50 560 547
Construction of the grand cathedral started almost 1,000 years ago and this building has influenced the design of Pisa buildings over the centuries. With a strong Romanesque style, the Pisa cathedral is simple in design, with wonderful use of coloured marble. In 1595 the Pisa cathedral was badly damaged by fire and many of the precious works inside were destroyed. These were quickly replaced by some leading Renaissance artists of the time and the interior was quickly refurbished.
Highlights include the famous Pisano pulpit - a masterpiece by Giovanni Pisano - which was discovered in a crate in 1926 and reassembled shortly after, the tomb of Emperor Henry VII by Tino da Camaino (1315) - which survived the fire, a large bronze lamp that inspired Galileo's law of the pendulum, bronze angels above the choir entrance - dating back over 400 years, an enormous 13th-century mosaic Christ Pancrator - completed in 1302 by Cimabue, and the large dome - which is full of highly detailed frescoes.
